Fisheries NSW empowers Officers against illegal fishing with specialised training

Fisheries NSW has strengthened its fisheries enforcement capabilities by providing specialised Government Investigations training to its Officers. This training has equipped them with enhanced skills in managing evidence and navigating legal procedures, enabling more effective efforts to combat illegal fishing activities and protect vital marine resources in their jurisdiction.

Situation

The Port Stephens Fisheries Institute (PSFI) sought to enhance the investigative capabilities of its Officers responsible for monitoring and enforcing fisheries regulations. These Officers required specialised training to effectively conduct investigations into illegal fishing activities.

Approach

The training program was meticulously tailored to align with the unique duties and challenges faced by PSFI Officers. Key components of the training included:

• establishing ethical standards and legislative foundations specific to fisheries regulations

• exploring various enforcement strategies and compliance actions tailored to the fishing industry

• techniques for gathering, documenting, and presenting evidence in fisheries investigations

• developing strategic approaches to investigations, focusing on illegal fishing practices like abalone poaching and mangrove fishing.

To provide hands-on experience, the training utilised realistic scenarios and simulations of illegal fishing practices such as abalone poaching and mangrove fishing. This approach not only enhanced understanding but also allowed participants to practice applying theoretical knowledge in practical situations.

Outcome

Participant feedback highlighted the value of the training in bridging theoretical knowledge with practical application. The program effectively equipped Officers with the necessary tools and knowledge to uphold fisheries regulations and combat illegal fishing practices. By tailoring the training to address the unique requirements of fisheries enforcement, PSFI ensured that its Officers were well-prepared to safeguard marine resources and uphold environmental conservation efforts within their jurisdiction.
